Just My Luck
Title Card
Just My Luck is a short film created by an independent production company Hughey House Productions, based in Texas. The charming story follows a teenage boy, hired to mow an overgrown lawn, only to accidentally awaken a magical genie, living in a watering can. Unfortunately this turn of events goes unnoticed by the teenager, who does not even realize he was granted three wishes. The film is a lighthearted combination of fantasy and comedy, presented as a modern day fairy tale.
I was tasked with creating the title card, which was integral in setting the correct tone for the story, as it appears near the beginning of the film. It needed to be whimsical and story book like, while reflecting the modern day characters and setting, a combination of vintage and comical. We knew it would not be polished, but rather have a hand-drawn quality to it. The decorative border, initially an afterthought became the center point of the design, appearing animated in the film and adding to the storytelling quality.
Below are some initial sketches presented to the client, based on the design brief. We ended up refining a combination of two concepts.
